Alan Thomas Nettleton

Alan Thomas Nettleton JD ’74 died in Portland in May of 2021. He was 75.

Tom was born in Portland, Oregon, in September 1945. A graduate of Clackamas High School and Portland State University, he was in his final year of law school and working part-time for an attorney when he met legal secretary Olivia Smith, whom he would marry.

Tom practiced law for several years before taking a position with the United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, where he worked for 22 years.

Tom and Olivia had no children but were part of the lives of other families, whom they cherished. They also shared their home with a long line of cats. Tom had expert knowledge of baseball and also enjoyed history and traveling. He and Olivia explored the Pacific Northwest, parts of Alaska, New England, much of Canada, Australia, a number of European countries, and Hawai’i. From childhood on, Tom was widely known for his quick wit and humor. 

Tom is survived by his wife, brother Frank, sisters-in-law Nadia Nettleton and Sibyl Gehlen, niece Eve Egan, nephew Jay Wenzel, an aunt, and several cousins. Tom was predeceased by his father, Ted; his mother, Marie; his well-loved stepmother, Evelyn; and his twin brother, Michael Timothy Nettleton.
