Advice or Tips for any L&C students: If not you, then who?
“Bahala ka sa buhay mo”, Tagalog for “it’s your life, it’s your choice”. The transition to entering Lewis and Clark will come with its challenges, no matter your background.
From my experience, as someone part of BIPOC and Queer communities, being at Lewis & Clark College can feel complicated. There may be moments you feel that you don’t belong here, but you do. You’ve earned your place, and you need to take up space. Seek and take up opportunities, speak up in class, share your perspectives, and don’t be afraid to step into organizational leadership. Representation matters, and sometimes your visibility makes it easier for the next student to step forward.
Continue to step forward and step up in communities here on campus. Whether it’s cultural organizations, interest-focused organizations, different programs, or friendships, you deserve spaces where you can thrive and don’t have to explain yourself.
Lastly, protect your energy by setting boundaries. You are not responsible for fixing every system on your own; be sure to rely on your community. Everyone here at IME is here to help you succeed.
So remember: take up space academically, socially, and institutionally. Apply for positions. Share your ideas. Ask the hard questions. Advocate for yourself, advocate for change. The campus grows when you show up fully as yourself.
