Lewis & Clark Law School Animal Legal Defense Fund

Madison Steffey

Madison is in her third year at Lewis & Clark, her one and only choice for law school because of its animal law program. She is so excited to be on the LC ALDF board again and has lots of ideas and issues she hopes for the chapter to cover this year!

She was born and raised outside of Denver, Colorado, where she graduated with a BS in Biology from Metropolitan State University of Denver. By studying biology, she hoped to provide herself with a respectable background to use in a career litigating and legislating for animal rights. Tokitae, the killer whale held captive in the smallest orca tank at the Miami Seaquarium for 49 years, was and is her main inspiration for going into animal law. On top of wanting to prosecute animal abusers, restore the salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest for the Southern Residents, and numerous other causes, her main goal after graduating is to get Tokitae out of Miami and back to her home waters.

Last year, Madison was a research assistant for Professor Kathy Hessler, researching material for the new Aquatic Animal Law class. She also wrote a paper detailing the animal issues involved in rodeos for the Animal Legal & Historical Center. This summer, she had privilege to clerk for the Criminal Justice Program of the Animal Legal Defense Fund, opening her eyes to the numerous ways ALDF helps prosecutors and attorneys across the nation protect animals and improve their status in the legal system.

This year, Madison is thrilled to work alongside an amazing group of women to keep the LC ALDF chapter going strong. She also is looking forward to being an Associate Editor for the Animal Law Review and having the chance to bring these two groups together through more events and outings!

In her miniscule amount of free time, she enjoys playing with and cuddling her dogs Rocket and Lighting, watching movies, eating good vegan food, and exploring Portland.

If you ever need help, have questions or suggestions, or want to grab an oat milk latte, feel free to contact Madison at!
