Criminal Justice Reform Clinic Obtains 14 Clemencies Since April

The Criminal Justice Reform Clinic (CJRC) petitioned for and received an amazing 14 commutations for their clients since April of this year. CJRC also made Oregon history when Governor Kate Brown commuted its client to the Parole Board after reducing his sentence from Life Without Parole to Life, the first time such a commutation has happened in Oregon.

LITC Secures Win for Jamaican Farmworkers

The Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) is co-counseling with attorney Ellen Kreitmeier to represent several farmworkers from Jamaica who were in the United States on H2A visas to harvest apples in 2018. The IRS rejected the farmworkers’ claims for a personal exemption based on a misapplication of a provision in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This caused the farmworkers to pay taxes on every dollar earned.

Alum Works to Pass First Emergency COVID Workplace Standards in Virginia

Jason Yarashes ’12, lead attorney and program coordinator of the Virginia Justice Project for Farm and Immigrant Workers at the Legal Aid Justice Center, led the charge to get Virginia to pass the first COVID-19 enforceable emergency workplace standard in the United States. Other states, including Oregon, are using this development to try and push their respective states and localities to do the same.

Incoming Student Profile: Jailhouse Lawyer Who Brought Case to Supreme Court

Incoming 2020 law student Calvin Duncan brings some 23 years of experience in the law from his work as a jailhouse lawyer. While he was an inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, he taught himself the law and helped to free several inmates. Lawyers sought his advice on issues, and he became very good at spotting a promising legal issue among his fellow inmates.

The 2019 DWT International Law Writing Awards winners are Alison Roth ’19 and Katelyn Kindberg ’19. Established through the generosity of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, the Lewis & Clark Law School award program provides a $2,500 stipend for the best research paper written in the past year by a Lewis & Clark JD student on any topic in private or public international law, and a $1,000 stipend for the second best paper.

Law School Celebrates 2019 Commencement

On May 18, 2019, over 150 graduates received their Juris Doctor degrees, with eight graduates receiving a Master of Studies in Law, and seventeen earning a Masters of Law degree in Animal Law or Environmental, Natural Resources & Energy Law.  Fifty-seven students earned academic honors and thirty-five were inducted into the Cornelius Honor Society, noting their commitment to the law school community.

This scholarship is awarded annually and is funded by the Quinault Indian Allottees Association. L&C Law School grants are based on financial need, a desire to work in the public interest field, and the ability to add to the diversity of the student body at Lewis & Clark Law School. Qualification for awards is determined from information on the law school application and student FAFSA data. Recipients are notified at the time of admission. Students can receive either a Dean’s Scholarship or an L&C Grant, but not both.

The Kay Kitagawa and Andy Johnson-Laird IP Scholarship

The Kay Kitagawa and Andy Johnson-Laird Intellectual Property Scholarship was established in 2007 by Lewis & Clark Law School friends, Kay Kitagawa and Andy Johnson-Laird.  

This $10,000 scholarship recognizes one Lewis & Clark Law School student annually who is in their first year of law school and studying intellectual property law.  In addition, the recipient will demonstrate academic prowess and a superior knowledge of computers and the internet. The recipient also must plan to practice in the area of intellectual property law with specific application to computers and the internet.  

Merchant Exchange Scholarship Fund

Undergraduate Jr/Sr level students or graduate students in Maritime/or International Business/ International Law programs are eligible to apply.  The application can be found on their website:www.pdxmex.com/scholarship. Please be advised that applications are due no later than May 31st.

Law alumna becomes first graduate to serve as U.S. senator

Heidi Heitkamp J.D. ’80 is the first woman elected to represent North Dakota in either the U.S. Senate or House and the first Lewis & Clark graduate to serve as a U.S. senator. Prior to this notable victory, Heitkamp served as tax commissioner and attorney general, and led two successful ballot initiatives in North Dakota.

The Paul H. Casey Scholarships were established by Paul Casey in honor of his late father, Henry Casey. Neva Elliott Scholarship

Neva Elliott, one of few female students at Lewis & Clark at the time of her attendance, worked for the law school and attended classes at night. She graduated in 1935. Ms. Elliott expressed her appreciation to the law school by establishing an endowed scholarship.

John E. Bates, former chair of the Lewis & Clark College Board of Trustees, and his wife, Susan, established this scholarship to encourage and support 1L law students who are planning to pursue a career in business law.

Jane Wiener Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Jane Wiener Scholarship Fund was established in 1985 to recognize Jane Wiener, a 1974 graduate of the Law School. The scholarship is intended to provide support to law students with physical disabilities.

Helping Hand Scholarship

The Helping Hand Scholarship was established by an anonymous alumni who graduated from law school with a profound respect for fellow students that juggled their studies and raising small children. The Helping Hand Scholarship is available to current students who are single parents with children under the age of 18 and special consideration is given to students with children under the age of six. This award is typically given to more than one student each year.

Harpole Memorial Legacy Scholarship

Named after alumna Joyce Ann Harpole J.D. ’79 this award is presented to a current law school student who embodies the qualities of Mrs. Harpole - a dedication to his or her legal studies and to the pursuit of justice while maintaining a sense of balance among career, family, and community and a dedication to his or her legal studies. Recipients are nominated by their peers.

Gantenbein Fellows Scholarships

These scholarships are funded through the generosity of the Gantenbein Society, a group of individuals who annually contribute $5,000 or more to the Law School. The scholarship is intended for students who have completed their first year of law school and have a record of outstanding performance. Each recipient receives an award of $5,000 and has a demonstrated record of good citizenship both within the law and in the greater community.

Candise DuBoff-Jones Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship seeks to perpetuate the values embraced by Candise DuBoff-Jones, a 1977 graduate of Lewis & Clark Law School. Students may apply in their second or third year of law school. The awards are granted to students who have a passion for the law, financial need, scholarly achievement and a demonstrated commitment to his or her school, profession and community. This award is typically given to more than one student each year.

Terry Wilson Scholarship

Created in memory of a law student, the recipients are to have a strong interest in public service and a work ethic that does not place personal gain as a first priority.  Recipients must show a willingness to use their legal skills to help others in trouble and in need of a champion of their cause. Additionally, when possible, the award is to go to students from the state of Washington who have an intention to practice there.

Andrea Swanner Redding Scholarship

This award honors the memory of Andrea Swanner Redding who graduated first in her class in 1986. Ms. Swanner Redding also served as Assistant Dean of Career Services at the law school at the time of her passing in 1996. She was also very active in Oregon State and Multnomah County Bar activities, National Association for Law Placement and Oregon Woman Lawyers.

The Alumni Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated alumni who continue to contribute to the Law School through personal and financial support. A current student is selected for this scholarships based on financial need, community involvement, scholarly achievement and plans for staying involved with the Law School after graduation.

Quinault Allottees: Nelson D. Terry Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually and is funded by the Quinault Indian Allottees Association. The scholarship is available to all incoming students, however, preference is given first to  Quinault Allottees, then to Native American regional and national applicants with a connection to their culture and heritage.
