Steve Doherty

Steve Doherty ‘84, a partner in Smith, Doherty & Belcourt, PC in Great Falls, Montana, is the governor-appointed chair of the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission. Elected to the Montana Senate for four-year terms in 1990, 1994, and 1998, he was Minority Leader during the 1999 and 2001 Legislatures, Majority Whip in 1993, and Minority Whip in 1995 and 1997. He was a Senate member of the Montana Environmental Quality Council from 1991-97 where he was Chair of the interim Energy Policy Study and Co-Chair of the Water Quality Nondegradation Subcommittee and the Enforcement Subcommittee. He is a member of the Oregon and Montana State Bars and the Yakama Nation Tribal Bar, and is admitted to practice before the Federal Courts in Oregon and Montana, the U.S. Claims Court, the Ninth and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals, and the Chippewa Cree and Blackfeet Tribal Courts.
