Transnational LGBTQ Couples

Join Stephen Manning, a partner at Immigration Law Group, PC and Teresa Statler, a sole immigration law practitioner in Portland, to explore policy and practice in this area of law. This will include the obstacles and legal consequences affecting transnational couples as opposed to domestic couples.Obstacles include residency, citizenship,detention, deportation and asylum.

Mediterranean food with vegan options, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

Criminal Aliens: the criminalization of undocumented immigrants

Criminal Aliens: A discussion of the Department of Homeland Security’s Criminal Alien Program, Secure Communities and the criminalization of undocumented immigrants.

The Obama administration has deported record numbers while claiming to focus removal efforts on “criminal aliens.” Who are these “criminal aliens,” how does the program work, and why has the ACLU sued Multnomah County? Join Stephen Manning, adjunct professor at Lewis& Clark, and Jaime Limon Guzman, an immigrant rights organizer, as they discuss these topics and more.

Join BLSA and LLS for a combined Judges Panel, “Minorities on the Bench”. Come meet Oregon Judges who will share how they came to Oregon, why they stayed and what they like most about being a Judge. Great opportunity for 1Ls to meet local Judges and learn first hand how to prepare for judicial clerkships and externships. This event will be held in Classroom 4, 12:15pm-1:30pm. Wrongful Convictions Panel: What Went Wrong?

Juan Meléndez and Greg Wilhoit, from Witness to Innocence, spent a combined 22+ years on death row for crimes they did not commit. Hear their powerful stories about their journey from death row to freedom. Professor Aliza Kaplan and Professor Tung Yin will provide legal insight on wrongful convictions and the criminal justice system.
