Georgia Victim Legal Assistance Network

Georgia Victim Legal Assistance Network

The Georgia Victim Legal Assistance Network (VLAN) includes four legal service organizations as its Primary Partners and Community Groups across the state providing non-legal services to victims of crime.  Georgia’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) received funding through the OVC in 2014 for the first phase of what hopefully will be a long-term project to assess and address the civil legal needs of crime victims in Georgia.

Georgia VLAN is in the process of completing an assessment of the needs of Georgia crime victims with Dr. Leah Daigle, a researcher at Georgia State University.  Georgia VLAN has developed a Steering Committee to advise its work and policy creation and is in the process of creating an Implementation Plan for three pilot projects it hopes to roll out in 2016 including attorneys and navigators to help address the specific needs of victims of crime and to refer victims to the appropriate Primary Partner or Community Group.  The Mission of Georgia VLAN is to enhance and extend services to crime victims by increasing communication and cooperation among victim service providers and to connect crime victims with Primary Partners and existing Community Groups serving victims of crime in order to stabilize the families of crime victims.

Primary Partners:

  • Atlanta Legal Aid Society
  • Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers’ Foundation
  • Georgia Legal Services Program
  • Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network

Proposed Entry Point-Intake Process:

Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) and Atlanta Legal Aid Society (ALAS) are the two major points of entry for victims of crime who need civil legal assistance in Georgia through the VLAN.   Victims in the 154 counties outside metro Atlanta contact the GLSP at 1-800-822-5391 or TDD 1-800-255-0056.  Victims in the 5 county metro Atlanta area (Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett, DeKalb, and Clayton/South Fulton) call ALAS at 404-524-5811.  Of course victims may enter into the Network through any partner organizations and be referred to the appropriate legal services provider.
