Hannah Crummé, in addition to her role as head of Watzek Library special collections and college archivist, has taken on the additional role of director of summer programs. Read the following Q&A with Crummé to learn about her new role and why L&C’s summer program is one for the books!
What are you responsible for in your new role?
This year, I am focused on helping increase engagement with our summer course offerings. This has meant working with people on- and off-campus, such as:
- The Dean’s office: to identify courses that regularly have long wait-lists;
- Faculty: to ask them to offer their waitlisted classes in the summer;
- Campus departments: to identify bottlenecks in their majors, and expand offerings with summer classes;
- Instructors: to convince them to offer courses online to increase accessibility for students that may not be in Portland (approximately half of summer classes will be offered online!);
- Registrar and Admissions: to (hopefully) open our summer offering to high school students who want to get ahead;
- Off-campus community: to reach Portlanders (young and old) who may want to take our summer courses, to learn a new subject or engage with their world in a new way.
Are there any summer classes that you are expecting will fill up quickly?
I’ll be excited to see! Students have a chance to get ahead in data science, psychology, health studies, and other important majors and minors, but they also have a chance to take really engaging humanities courses like Fairy Tales and Greek Myths. The whole catalogue is really exciting!

Who is eligible to take summer classes?
Currently, our students, students from other universities and colleges, and community members who have completed their high school education. We are working really hard to add current high school students to this mix.
What would you tell faculty who may be interested in teaching a summer class?
Talk to me. It’s a wonderful opportunity to help the institution meet some of its revenue goals and, because of a program of pay equity in the summer, is an opportunity to make extra money yourself. Beyond this, it is an opportunity to teach in smaller classes, and at a more focused pace, which can be a really excellent challenge. Happy to discuss!
What is your favorite way to enjoy a Portland summer when you’re not on campus?
My little dog Fred and I walk!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
For the past decade, I have worked in the library as the primary custodian of our college’s collection of rare books. In this capacity, I have worked with the alumni office, the advancement office, the communications office, and the faculty. I have taught in CORE and English. But I have never tried to solve the interesting and knotty administrative questions that summer elicits. Have patience with me! And if you have an idea that I don’t seem to be acting on, bring it to me and we’ll work on it together.
