Transitions, whether graduating, changing roles, or taking on new responsibilities can strengthen or disrupt people’s sense of connection and confidence. Schlossberg’s Transition Theory offers a framework for understanding what helps people navigate change successfully.

The “4 S System” identifies four factors: Situation (what’s changing), Self (personal resources), Support (help from others), and Strategies (coping approaches). When these factors are strong, transitions go more smoothly.

As you explore this resource, consider:

  • What transitions are people in our community navigating?
  • Which of the “4 S’s” might be weakest for those in transition?
  • How could we strengthen support or provide strategies for managing change?

Understanding transitions helps us create conditions for people to move through change with greater confidence.
