Alongside her husband and former board chair, John, Susan Bates was a foundational pillar of our community and the co-founder of the Bates Center for Entrepreneurship and Leadership.
“Susan was incredibly generous and a real force of nature,” said President Robin Holmes-Sullivan. “While we mourn her passing, we celebrate the lasting impact of her spirit and actions on the institution and on our students.”
Before her transformational work at Lewis & Clark, Susan was a pioneering educator in the Beaverton School District, teaching financial and computer literacy long before they were widely embraced. Her deep passion for education shaped her philanthropic legacy on our campus:
-
Global Engagement: In 1979, Susan, John, and their son Christopher co-led a life-changing study abroad trip to the Benelux countries for 24 Lewis & Clark students.
-
The Bates Center: In 2017, the Bates family pledged a transformational $1 million endowment to found the Center, sparking a wave of giving across the institution.
-
Student Investment Fund: In 2021, Susan donated $210,000 to establish the Student-Managed Investment Fund, honoring her father and ensuring real-world financial stewardship for liberal arts students.
Details regarding the memorial service will be shared when they become available.
