Summary:

These days, people spend hours hunched over our devices, trying to feel connected to the world. But the impulse isn’t new, as an exhibit at Lewis & Clark showcasing hundreds of years of medieval manuscripts reveals. As Lewis & Clark Professor Karen Gross notes, these handcrafted books were as compelling as any social media or online source today. People “have used them and abused them, kissed them [and] scribbled in them for centuries,” creating a dazzling record of human thought and emotion.
