Government agencies have a responsibility to provide accurate information to the public. But, says Lewis & Clark Law Professor Juliet Stumpf, social media posts from federal agencies are increasingly distorting their portrayals of immigrants, using memes and tropes that conjure up FBI’s most wanted posters or reality TV shows. In reality, Stumpf notes, “Immigrants actually tend to commit fewer crimes than even U.S. citizens do. And that’s true of immigrants who have lawful status here and immigrants who don’t.”
