The purpose of Math Club is to organize and facilitate both academic and social events for students interested in mathematics and related subjects. Through these events, we hope to create community in the math department. Annual events include a Halloween pumpkin carving contest, the Pi Mu Epsilon (math honor society) induction ceremony, Open Math Night, a Pi Day celebration, and the Isaac Clark Memorial Chess Tournament. Open Math Night is an open mic event where students and professors present mathematical performances such as poems, stories, songs, etc. The chess tournament was established in memory of Isaac Clark, an L&C math and physics major who was tragically killed in a 2011 skateboarding accident. This tournament is a way for the math department to connect with the greater Portland community by bringing kids to campus for a fun day of chess. Other potential events on the schedule for this academic year include a party to celebrate Maryam Mirzakhani, who this year became the first woman to win the Fields Medal (the “Nobel Prize of mathematics”), a math girls’ night out, a movie night, and a Christmas cookie decorating party.
