Students Engaged in Eco-Defense (SEED) is dedicated to creating a more sustainable and just world. Our focus is to bring green, sustainable practices to Lewis & Clark College and conduct outreach to the larger community.
We run the Lewis & Clark College Bee Garden, located on the Graduate Campus. Our garden includes three beehives that are maintained by students and serve to educate the community on the fascinating lives of bees and the important role that pollinators play in the environment and in our food systems. In the spring and fall, SEED’s student beekeepers host weekly hive inspections which are open to the community.
As a Bee Campus USA–certified college, L&C supports pollinators by creating habitat, increasing the abundance of native plants on campus, reducing pesticide use, and providing educational opportunities that foster awareness of pollinator conservation. Since becoming certified in 2023, Lewis & Clark students, staff, and faculty have served on a committee that advances our commitments to conserving native pollinators. Want to get involved? Join the Bee Campus committee! We welcome anyone interested in helping make our campus a better place for pollinators.
SEED also runs a free, sustainable detergent sheet refill machine, located on the upper level of Fowler Student Center, near the Fields Dining Hall entrance.
Another resource SEED supports is The Nest. The Nest is Lewis and Clark’s community resource center, open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.. The Nest Offers free food, textbooks to check out, and resources such as menstrual products, Narcan, and pregnancy tests. Stop by at Robert’s 112 to check it out!
