Itinerary

Friday, November 6th:
ARRIVE | OVERNIGHT IN PANAMA CITY, PANAMA
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport Panama (PTY), Panama City on November 6, 2026, where you will be met by your driver and transferred to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel (or similar) for an overnight. This evening, join your fellow travelers and Lewis & Clark Faculty Host, Professor Stephen Dow Beckham, for a welcome cocktail reception. Presentation by Historian Stephen Dow Beckham
Dinner will be at your leisure.
Saturday, November 7:
PANAMA CITY | COLÓN | EMBARK
After breakfast at the hotel, begin your day with a guided walk through Old Panamá, the ruins of the original city founded in 1519 and later destroyed by the English pirate Henry Morgan. Tour the former Canal Zone, where Teddy Roosevelt’s legacy as the driving force behind the construction of the canal is captured in the civic buildings of the district,
including the iconic Balboa Administration Building, and then continue to Colonial Panama (Casco Viejo), a UNESCO World Heritage Site where narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-hued architecture, and lively plazas showcase the city’s blend of old and new. Enjoy lunch before driving across the isthmus to Colón to embark on Le Bellot. (B,L,D)
Sunday, November 8:
SAN BLAS ISLANDS
Spend the day in the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of palm-fringed islets with white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. The reefs here are perfect for snorkeling among parrotfish, angelfish, and colorful corals. If you prefer, simply stretch out on the beach beneath the palms or go for a swim. The San Blas Islands belong to the autonomous Guna Yala territory, and you may well encounter Guna villagers selling their distinctive molas (intricate, hand-sewn textiles) and other crafts. (B,L,D)
Monday, November 9:
CROSSING THE PANAMA CANAL
Teddy Roosevelt’s vision of a canal through the isthmus of Panama was made a reality in 1914, saving ships traveling between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans approximately 8,000 nautical miles. Your transit of this engineering marvel begins in Colón, where massive locks raise your vessel over 85 feet to the level of Gatun Lake. As you make
your way across the lake and through the Gaillard Cut, a narrow passage through the continental divide, you are surrounded by wildlife-rich rainforest. At the end of the day-long journey, descend through the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores Locks to reach the Pacific. (B,L,D)
Tuesday, November 10:
FUERTE AMADOR, FLAMENCO ISLAND
Today, Le Bellot will be docked on Flamenco Island, located at the tip of the Amador Causeway, which stretches from the southern entrance of the Panama Canal several miles into the Pacific Ocean, and which was built with rock excavated during the construction of the canal. Known for its restaurants, shops, and scenic views, the island provides easy access to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center and also serves as a gateway to the villages of the Emberá tribes who inhabit the dense forests surrounding
the Chagres River to the north. Presentation by Historian Stephen Dow Beckham (B,L,D)
Wednesday, Nov. 11:
PLAYA MUERTO, DARIÉN NATIONAL PARK
Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1983, Darién National Park comprises a wonderfully rich diversity of landscapes— mountains, coastal plains, mangroves, and river valleys—which teem with an equally rich diversity of flora and fauna. The park famously supports species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects that are extremely
rare in other parts of Central America. The Darién region is also home to a large population of indigenous peoples; in Playa Muerto, you will meet a tiny coastal community of Emberá Amerindians, eager to share their traditions and talk about how they continue to live as their ancestors did, before the Spanish arrived. (B,L,D)
Thursday, November 12:
AT SEA
Enjoy a day at sea, attending lectures and briefings, treating yourself to the amenities on board, or simply relaxing on deck as you cruise the open ocean. Presentation by Historian Stephen Dow Beckham (B,L,D)
Friday, November 13:
GOLFITO, COSTA RICA
This morning finds you in Golfito, a small port town across the Golfo Dulce from Costa Rica’sOsa Peninsula, which has been described as
“the most biologically intense area on earth.”This is particularly the case with marine mammals, as you will discover on a dolphin-watching tour aboard a local catamaran. Look for pods of dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, and other marine life as your naturalist guide provides commentary. If the weather permits, there will be leisure time, where you
can enjoy and swim in the placid waters of a
local beach. (B,L,D)
Saturday, November 14 :
PUNTARENAS | DISEMBARK | SAN JOSÉ
From Puntarenas, drive across the Pacific Lowlands and through the lush Central Valley into the highlands north of San José to reach Poás Volcano National Park. Here, surrounded by cloud forest, you will have the opportunity to peer into one of the world’s largest active craters and walk among the fumaroles. Descending from the mountains, travel to the Doka Estate Coffee Plantation, a family-run farm on the slopes of the Central Valley, for a traditional Costa Rican lunch and a tour tracing the process that transforms beans into the country’s iconic coffee. Late in the afternoon, check in to your hotel, Costa Rica Marriott Hotel Hacienda Belen (or similar) in San José for an evening at leisure and an independent dinner. Presentation by Historian Stephen Dow Beckham (B,L).

Historian Stephen Dow Beckham
Stephen Dow Beckham, professor emeritus, well-known scholar, and beloved teacher,is currently on the board of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. Beckham brings a historian’s perspective to Roosevelt’s legacy of exploration and conservation, offering insights into the Panama Canal era of United States history. Professor Beckham joined the Lewis & Clark faculty in 1977. His teaching has been
recognized with numerous honors, including the Pamplin Professorship of History, Oregon Professor of the Year, the American Historical Association’s Asher Distinguished Teaching Award, and the Earle A. Chiles Award for contributions to understanding the American West.
Among his most memorable teaching experiences were field-based courses such as Indians of the Northwest Coast, taught while sailing in British Columbia; On the Trail of Lewis and Clark, which retraced the explorers’ route, often on horseback, from the Bitterroot Mountains to the Pacific; and an East Africa study program, culminating with a dawn climb of Mount Kenya.
Stephen is equally excited to lead our group of travelers on this special adventure through the Caribbean.
