Inaugural recipient of the John T. Krallman Award Announced

Lauren Matosziuk ’23 is the inaugural recipient of the John T. Krallman Award. The award was created in memory of John T. Krallman, ’11, a gifted environmental lawyer with exceptional expertise in the Clean Air Act and related regulatory statutes. Endowed by his parents, with additional funding from friends and family, the John T. Krallman Award is presented each year to a graduating Lewis & Clark law student who shares John’s interest in the Clean Air Act and similar areas and plans a career that will include these legal tools.

In addition to her JD from Lewis & Clark, Lauren has an impressive background in the sciences. She earned a bachelor’s in chemistry from Duquesne University and a PhD in chemistry from Northwestern University. Lauren also holds a master of science in sustainable forest management from Oregon State. Prior to attending law school, she worked as an organic chemist doing environmental research and as a soil chemist with the Soil Carbon Science Team in 2020 at Indigo, where she supported the development of a carbon credit program that rewarded farmers for transitioning to more environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.

During her time in law school, Lauren pursued the environmental program and received a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law along with her JD. She won a spot on the law school’s national environmental law moot court team, which competes with teams nationwide at a competition hosted by Pace. Lauren received the honor of best oralist out of all competitors in 2023. She also served as valedictorian and commencement speaker at the 2023 commencement program at the law school. She will be working as an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environmental and Natural Resources Division on regulatory matters.

“Lauren in the perfect inaugural recipient of this award,” said Professor Craig Johnston, who worked with John’s parents in establishing the criteria for the award. He added that “John would be absolutely thrilled with this choice. Lauren is a superstar who is very eager to make her mark in the pollution-law area, particularly on Clean Air Act matters. The fact that, like John, she is very much a team player is even further icing on the cake.”
