The Cartopia food cart pod on SE Hawthorne and 12th boasts a host of amazing food, including Pyro Pizza, owned by John Eads. John moved to Portland about ten years ago and spent several years working as a business advisor for Hacienda CDC and the Portland Mercado. In 2010, he started Pyro Pizza. The large food cart with its elegant wood siding houses a huge oven to make wood fired pizza.
John focuses on using local ingredients for his pizza and even began developing his own sodas using natural cane sugar and real ingredients from fruits, roots and herbs. The sodas are as big of a draw as the delicious pizza. He has used his business experience to develop his sodas into a second business, Portland Craft Soda.
John’s advice to new business owners is that it is okay if you don’t know everything about owning a business. Most people don’t. But you should definitely seek out help in the areas you aren’t experienced in. Pyro Pizza came to the SBLC Intern Program over the summer seeking help exploring alternative ownership options.
