Sweet Honey in the Rock

Sweet Honey in the EAR Forest is an audio piece recorded by Anais Batiz-Fischetti, created by Sweet Honey in the Rock during their Spring 2024 performance at the Agnes Flannagan Chapel on Lewis and Clark campus. In April of 2024, Sweet Honey in the Rock (TM) visited Lewis & Clark to record music and reflections for the EAR Forest. This renowned African American women’s a cappella ensemble, known for its attention to social justice and its Grammy-nominated music, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. At Lewis & Clark, they met with students, faculty, and community members in a packed workshop and conversation at Agnes Flanagan Chapel.

In the Fall of 2024, the Cappella Nova chamber choir, directed by Prof. Kathy FitzGibbon, curated a custom sound installation in the EAR Forest that interweaves a rain forest chant that Sweet Honey in the Rock taught the LC community to sing, Sweet Honey’s reflections on what we owe our forests, and their ideas about how to lead a thoughtful and interconnected life. Produced by Anais Batiz Fischetti ’25, this 10-minute installation can be experienced once or dozens of times, with different experiences from different parts of the EAR Forest trail.

EAR Forest Honors Albina’s Musical Legacy

Lewis & Clark partnered with the Albina Music Trust to preserve Portland’s Black musical heritage, bringing Albina’s songs to campus through a panel discussion and immersive sound installation.
