As we embark on this new semester, the OEI wanted to share a resource on belonging during transition periods. “The Power of Belonging in Times of Transition” examines how communities maintain connection during transitions, and we have pulled some practical elements that resonated with as we welcome everyone back:
- Belonging requires intentional reconnection after time apart with bonds needing conscious effort to reactivate
- Communities stay cohesive when they reconnect people to shared stories and purpose beyond the transactional, moving beyond surface-level goals.
- Belonging requires balancing between tradition and transformation. Successful communities honor their shared origin while welcoming diverse member needs – which is particularly relevant in evolving campus environments.
Reflecting on the article, what are ways we might create or engage rituals of return to foster a sense of belonging? How might stories or moments from before or even during break could we revisit to help people feel continuity?
This reading is a reminder that emphasizing our core values is crucial to fostering belonging, especially during transition periods.
