It’s almost spring break! Whether you’re traveling, spending time with friends, or just catching up on rest and relaxation, we hope you get a chance to recharge! However you choose to spend your time, here are a few things to keep in mind as you head into the break. If your plans include activities where substances are in the mix, a little preparation can go a long way. Plan ahead for safe transportation. Look out for your friends. Remember that pacing yourself, drinking water often, and eating beforehand helps improve your body’s response. Be aware - substances can affect everybody differently, so pay attention to your own signals for when to slow down or stop. FYI, check out our Harm Reduction Tips and Substance Related Resources.

Spring break can also bring new connections and experiences! Remember to keep consent and respect at the center of any interaction. One helpful way to think about consent is FRIES:

  • Freely given - no pressure or coercion
  • Reversible - anyone can change their mind
  • Informed - everyone knows what they’re agreeing to
  • Enthusiastic - people genuinely want to participate
  • Specific - saying yes to one thing doesn’t mean yes to everything

If you or someone you know needs support, visit our Sexual and Interpersonal Violence page to learn more about campus and community resources. You can also access safer sex supplies outside of the HPW office!

Wishing you a safe and restorative spring break!
