As we look back on the Spring Fine Arts Season at Lewis & Clark, we have been reflecting on the verdancy of our arts community and the ways in which seeds we planted five years ago are beginning to grow into a vibrant ecosystem of artists, faculty, students and community. The Transgressors Exhibit at the Hoffman this spring was a perfect example of the growth of our Native Artist Scholar program over the past four years. This exhibit, curated by our 2024-25 Native Artist Scholar Anthony Hudson in collaboration with Felix Furby, was part of our programming last year; we brought a group of students and community members out to the Chachalu Museum and Cultural Center in Grand Ronde for a tour of the exhibit and artist talk. This spring’s Hoffman exhibit featured the work of next year’s Native Artist Scholar, Steph Littlebird, and programming also included a conversation about the exhibit between Steph and the 2025-26 Native Artist Scholar Luhui Whitebear. As envisioned by President Holmes-Sullivan in partnership with the Native Alumni Council, the Native Artist Scholar in Residence program is committed to building a relationship with Indigenous communities based on honesty, respect, and reparative action. This spring’s exhibition brought together three of our Native Artist Scholars around one program, and demonstrated the authentic and long-term relationships we are building between Lewis & Clark and the Indigenous communities of our region.

2026 Senior Art Exhibit in the Hoffman Gallery, April 2026 2026 Senior Art Exhibit in the Hoffman Gallery, April 2026This spring saw a riot of artistic endeavors blooming all over campus from a new Dance/Theatre collaboration devised by students, to a stunning Senior Art Exhibition, to dozens of musical performances, to Jacob Kirkegaard’s residency in the EAR Forest. We again occupied Watzek once a month for our arts pop-up with performances ranging from 15th century choral music with Professor John Cox in conjunction with the Medieval manuscripts exhibit to Tiffany Mills’s creative movement class dancing through the stacks! Our students continue to be endlessly creatively engaged in student-run arts programming such as Art Club, A Capella, Once Upon a Weekend, and Poetry Club.

In Andrea Lewis’s (Art History ’21) profile she highlights the way the arts education she received at Lewis & Clark continues to bear fruit in her career. “My art history degree has been instrumental in shaping my career. It gave me the ability to write confidently, analyze and describe in detail, and draw connections across cultures and time periods. It has also provided me with a strong visual reference library, which enhances my understanding of architecture, interior design, and art, as well as my writing and design aesthetic.”

We hope to see you on campus for the cornucopia of arts events in store this fall!
