Animal Law at Lewis & Clark

Here at Lewis & Clark Law School, there is a long and rich tradition of Animal Law. Lewis & Clark Law School has led American law schools in developing this emerging field for sixteen years, most recently through the notable efforts of the National Center for Animal Law.

In 2008, a historic collaborative effort between Lewis & Clark Law School and the Animal Legal Defense Fund brought about the creation of the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS).  CALS is building on the tremendous work already done to further advance the field of Animal Law and prepare students to become leaders and advocates.

Lewis & Clark Law School houses the most extensive Animal Law Program in the nation. Students may choose from a wide variety of courses focusing on animal-related issues.  Some of the animal law course offerings include:

  • Animal Law: An Overview
  • Animal Rights Law
  • Animal Law: Legislation, Lobbying & Litigation
  • International Wildlife Law
  • Advanced Animal Law Seminar
  • Animal Law Legislation Externship
  • Advanced Animal Law Seminar
  • Animal Law Clinic

Law students may specialize in animal law by earning a certificate of emphasis through the Environmental Law Certificate Program.  In addition, animal law students have the opportunity to participate in Animal Law Review (Animal Law), the Animal Law Clinic, the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, the National Animal Law Competitions, The Animal Law Conference at Lewis & Clark, as well as research projects for the Center for Animal Law Studies.
