Below you will see an email that Judge Ortega wrote to pass on to the 1Ls:
Welcome to law school!
I am a judge on the Court of Appeals and have been coming to your campus nearly weekly for several years to host what I call “debriefing sessions” for 1L students.  The reason I do this is because I remember feeling pretty alienated from the law school experience when I was a student.  I come from a lower middle-class mixed race (European and Mexican descent) family and my parents had not gone to college, let alone professional school.  They did not want me to attend law school and it was a hard road to get there for me.  Once I got there, I felt seriously outclassed and often confused.  It wasn’t until my second year in school that I found a safe context for processing my feelings of confusion and alienation.
My sessions at Lewis & Clark aim to provide 1Ls with a safe context to understand and help each other through your law school experience.  I have been hosting such sessions weekly through the MLSA organizations at both Lewis & Clark Law School (for seven years) and Willamette School of Law (for six years) and hear from students that they find the discussions very helpful.
We’ll hold the sessions on most Mondays at noon, and you’ll get regular reminders if you are on the MLSA listserve.  To welcome you and to start things off, however, I’d like to invite you to join me, J.B. Kim, and some upper-division MLSA members for beer and snacks at the Lucky Lab Pub on Hawthorne at 5 p.m. on August 23rd.  Whether or not you think you can attend the regular debriefing sessions, I’d love the opportunity to meet you and encourage you as you embark on your law school journey.
I hope to see you on August 23rd!
All the best,
Darleen Ortega
