Civil Claims for Crime Victims

Every crime victim has a potential tort claim against the perpetrator(s) and responsible third parties. Advising the victim whether to pursue such a claim requires some basic knowledge of tort law and the interplay between civil and criminal cases. This program will provide an overview of the most common intentional and negligence tort claims and possible civil legal remedies; address factors to consider when deciding whether and when to file a civil lawsuit; and highlight certain challenges that may arise, including challenges faced by the victim and her/his civil attorney while the criminal proceedings are ongoing.
