Opt In: Restoring Voting Rights. Safeguarding Democracy

September 30, 2020

12:00-1:00p.m. PDT

The right to vote represents the lifeblood of our democracy. Yet this fundamental guarantee has been denied to marginalized groups—both historically and today. From poll taxes and grandfather clauses to gerrymandering, voter ID laws, and the mass purging of voter rolls, the disenfranchisement of vulnerable minorities undermines the legitimacy of our elections. Join this talk featuring ACLU voting rights attorney Molly McGrath to learn more about the fight to restore voting rights in the battleground state of Wisconsin and what you and the Lewis & Clark community can do to champion these efforts.

Molly McGrath is a voting rights attorney, advocate, and organizer who currently works in the ACLU’s National Political Advocacy Department, where she leads voting rights campaigns across the country and is also the host of the ACLU’s new voting podcast At the Polls. She has spent most of her career on the ground assisting voters one-on-one who have been disenfranchised by suppressive voting laws—like strict photo ID laws—and organizing volunteers to do the same. In Wisconsin, Molly searches for would-be voters, documents cases of disenfranchisement, and offers the support and resources people need to get IDs and get to the polls. She has been featured in the New York Times, Today Show, CNN, MTV, Mother Jones, and many other national outlets and documentaries.
