Mentor Awards
April 14, 2016
At the 20th Annual Mentor Awards presentation, we honored law professionals for the commitment and friendship they provided to our students during the 2015–16 academic year.
We are grateful to all the alumni and friends who generously gave of their time.
The recipients of the First-Year Outstanding Mentor Award were Courtney Johnson ’07, who mentored Danielle Elefritz; Anthony Kuchulis ’08, who mentored Kadin Pasley; Andrew Lavin ’03, who mentored Evan Christopher; and Cathy Meyer ’13, who mentored Alysha Van Zante.
This year we introduced a new award: Outstanding Mentor to a Transfer Student. Transfer students bring with them unique issues and experiences, and often require mentors to take a different approach. Sheeba Suhaskumar ’14 was presented the award by mentee Lekha Fernandes.
The Honorable Darlene Ortega Award honors extraordinary mentors who work with multiple mentees, both individually and as a group. For several years, Raife Neuman ’08 has successfully mentored numerous students simultaneously, often adopting a few “unofficial mentees” along the way. He was presented the award by mentee Mark McCarter.
The Andrea Swanner Redding Outstanding Mentor Award was presented to Ron Cheng ’14 by his mentee, Gregory Jones. Cheng, in turn, presented the Outstanding Mentee Award to Jones.

From the Dean
Speaking with students is one of my favorite parts of being dean. At Lewis & Clark Law School, I’ve discovered a rare and powerful combination: students who pair fierce dedication to their mission with deep collaboration and a genuine commitment to each other’s success.

Beyond the Bar
Most graduates of law school go on to practice law, working in law firms or providing legal counsel to organizations and businesses. Yet, for some, the lessons of law apply more broadly, and the outcome of their law school education has been a surprising and successful career outside of law.
