PILP Auction Returns
February 11, 2017
The auction is the group’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to support the summer stipend and loan repayment assistance programs. These important programs provide financial assistance to students and alumni pursuing careers at legal aid organizations, conservation nonprofits, immigrant rights groups, and other public interest law organizations.
Thanks to the generosity of attendees, the 2017 PILP Auction yielded nearly $80,000 in gross profits, shattering the fundraising goal. PILP auctioned off packages that included an evening with bestselling author Phillip Margolin, a weeklong stay in Bali, and a winter getaway to Mount Hood. Services donated by students, including baking and pet sitting, were also a hit.
“The auction was especially successful this year because of our executive board’s persistent dedication and proactive planning the past nine months,” said PILP President Lydeah Negro ’17. “Public interest law is vital to our communities and I was inspired and humbled by the amount of support we saw!”
This year’s event also honored U.S. District Judge Michael McShane ’88, who was presented with the Larry K. Amburgey Commitment to Public Interest Law Award. McShane worked for the Metropolitan Public Defender for nearly a decade before being appointed to the bench. His acceptance speech at the Lewis & Clark event garnered a standing ovation.

From the Dean
Speaking with students is one of my favorite parts of being dean. At Lewis & Clark Law School, I’ve discovered a rare and powerful combination: students who pair fierce dedication to their mission with deep collaboration and a genuine commitment to each other’s success.

Beyond the Bar
Most graduates of law school go on to practice law, working in law firms or providing legal counsel to organizations and businesses. Yet, for some, the lessons of law apply more broadly, and the outcome of their law school education has been a surprising and successful career outside of law. Here are just a few of our alums who followed an alternative route.
