The International Environmental Law Project (IELP) at Lewis & Clark Law School has hired Nick Fromherz as a staff attorney for the clinic.
Fromherz joins IELP from Sea Shepherd Legal (SSL) where he served as SSL’s senior attorney. IELP Director Erica Lyman explained how he will impact IELP. “Nick’s connections and fluency in Spanish will allow us to expand our work to Latin America and to build on IELP’s fisheries program, as well as support our international wildlife practice.”
Fromherz’s first IELP project has been to assess whether Bolivian law currently meets international best practices for combating wildlife trafficking and associated crimes. The work was commissioned by the ABA Rule of Law Initiative. “We have several other great projects that we’re working on this semester and are looking forward to sharing those, and the students’ involvement, as the semester unfolds,” said Lyman.
“It’s an honor to join IELP,” Fromherz said. “I’m excited to contribute to the impressive body of work developed by Professors Chris Wold and Erica Lyman. Of equal importance, I’m looking forward to collaborating with the amazing students at Lewis & Clark. I have a special interest in marine fauna and issues concerning wildlife in Latin America; those are areas in which I’ll be working especially hard to enlarge IELP’s footprint.”
Before transiting to environmental work, Fromherz served as a litigation attorney for a law firm in California and spent three years clerking for federal judges (Judge Lawson of E.D. Mich. and Judge Terrence Evans of the Seventh Circuit). He graduated as the valedictorian of his law-school class at the University of San Diego in 2006. His writing has appeared in Foreign Affairs, Stanford Environmental Law Journal, Ecology Law Quarterly, West Virginia Law Review, Washington University Global Studies Law Review, and Administrative Law Review.
Since 2012, Fromherz has worked with Lewis & Clark as a Visiting Assistant Professor, teaching courses within the Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law program. Fromherz has also taught Administrative Law at Lewis & Clark during several summer sessions since 2015.
