Delcianna Winders, Director of the Animal Law Litigation Clinic, published an op-ed in New York Daily News on April 28, 2020, regarding the Trump administration’s use of the coronavirus as an excuse to loosen meat-processing rules.
Winders’ article addresses the efforts by the Trump Administration to remove slaughter-line speed limits (how fast a slaughterhouse can kill animals) due to the COVID-19 crisis and the “necessity” of the slaughterhouses. The article explains the dangers to workers, animals, and the environment if these speed limits were to be removed and why these places should not be considered “essential” and be ordered to remain open.
