CLEs on Emerging Issues in International Wildlife Law

In order to raise awareness of contemporary legal issues in international wildlife law, Senior Staff Attorney Nicholas Fromherz and Clinical Professor and Director Erica Lyman ’05, of the Global Law Alliance for Animals and the Environment, have recorded a series of CLEs covering topics such as a new fourth protocol to the U.N. Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime modeled on the U.S. Lacey Act. Even after a century on the books, the U.S. Lacey Act continues to stand as a tool in the global fight against the organized criminal networks trafficking in wildlife, including fish and forestry products. Other CLE topics include an examination of legal opportunities to reduce pandemic risk from the wildlife trade and an overview of how the permissive U.S. law approach to wildlife transit through the country en route to foreign markets makes the U.S. an unwitting participant in illegal wildlife trade.

Combating Wildlife Trafficking Through Enforcement Trainings

The Global Law Alliance for Animals and the Environment (GLA) has conducted several workshops to combat the trafficking of wildlife in Latin America and Africa. These trainings focus primarily on promoting best practices amongst the judiciary and enforcement officers.

By way of example, the GLA is part of an ongoing collaboration with the American Bar Association (ABA) Rule of Law Initiative to conduct trainings in Peru. As part of this initiative, Clinical Professor and Director Erica Lyman ’05 and Senior Staff Attorney Nicholas Fromherz shared a series of recommended legal and policy reforms with Peruvian officials. The ABA Rule of Law Initiative has collected these recommended reforms as part of a forthcoming publication, Handbook for Strengthening the Fight Against Wildlife Crimes. Other trainings occurred in Bolivia, Malawi, Liberia, Ghana, and Nigeria.
