Dear friends,

Our mission at Lewis & Clark Law School is to help our students “develop the legal knowledge, critical thinking, practical skills, and values that empower them to excel as ethical and engaged professionals in a diverse and dynamic world.” In these pages, I am inspired to share the stories of our mission in action.

  • Our faculty are collaborating on cutting edge legal issues such as alternative protein and food sustainability in annual Food Law symposiums.
  • Our clinics are providing practical opportunities for students to represent, litigate, advocate for legislation, and be a voice for those who have limited ability to navigate the legal system.
  • The “Post-Ramos” story is one laudable example of our practical training, describing how our Criminal Justice Reform Clinic helped to change Oregon’s nonunanimous jury law, and continues to advocate for state retroactivity. Our students are learning that it takes patience and dedication to make changes for the better.
  • Our class notes highlight the many adventures of our wonderful alumni. I was particularly intrigued by the descriptions of legal life in Alaska!

We thank you, our alumni and friends, for your contributions of time, wisdom and financial support for our law school. I am very grateful for your engagement and for each and every gift we receive to support our students. I hope you enjoy this 2022 Advocate!

Warm regards,

Jennifer Johnson
