Dear fellow alums,
This has been a year of growth for the Alumni Board. We’ve welcomed nine new Alumni Board members, including Brett Bender ’87, Stacie Damazo ’19, Ted James ’21, Dr. John Kenagy ’21, Ally McLain ’18, Carrie Ng ’22, Carlisle Pearson ’20, Mitch Tsai ’10, and Christina Vieira da Rosa ’21!
The Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship is also growing. Our goal is to double the current endowment for a total of $200K. Every year, we give scholarships to 2Ls who are chosen based on financial need, community involvement, scholarly achievement, and plans for staying involved with the law school after graduation. This year, we were pleased to award the scholarship to Arlette Lozano Villegas, 2L. She was seven years old when her family crossed the U.S.-Mexico border and spent her childhood advocating for her family through the challenges they faced as undocumented immigrants. Arlette is exactly the type of student we need at Lewis & Clark—helping other families navigate the complex legal landscape of immigration rights. With the growing cost of, well, frankly, everything, it is vitally important that we are able to support current law students. If you feel moved to give to the Alumni Board of Directors Scholarship, I urge you to do so: go.lclark.edu/law-alumni-scholarship
The Alumni Board is always looking for ways to connect with fellow alums and current law students. Last year, we hosted an alumni networking reception for recent grads and a pumpkin carving contest for current students; we volunteered at the Oregon Food Bank in November. We kicked off 2023 with an alumni happy hour and cohosted the Distinguished Honors Dinner with Dean Jennifer Johnson at Waverley Country Club; donated a basket to PILP; and selected our scholarship recipient. Stay tuned for news from our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee on its partnership with the BIPOC Mentorship Program!

From the Dean
Speaking with students is one of my favorite parts of being dean. At Lewis & Clark Law School, I’ve discovered a rare and powerful combination: students who pair fierce dedication to their mission with deep collaboration and a genuine commitment to each other’s success.

Legal Expertise Supports Migratory Species
Professors Chris Wold and Erica Lyman facilitated a workshop with CMS Parties to discuss the legal contours of some of the treaty’s most important provisions.

Beyond the Bar
Most graduates of law school go on to practice law, working in law firms or providing legal counsel to organizations and businesses. Yet, for some, the lessons of law apply more broadly, and the outcome of their law school education has been a surprising and successful career outside of law. Here are just a few of our alums who followed an alternative route.
