The International Law Committee named Kelsey Chapman-Sutton ’24 and Beth Sethi ’24 as the recipients of this year’s Davis Wright Tremaine International Law Writing Award. Chapman-Sutton secured first place for her paper on the 2014 Gaza War, while Sethi placed second for her work on Convention Against Torture (CAT) claims in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Chapman-Sutton’s paper, “Four Boys Buried in July: Law and Rhetoric of Violence in the Lead Up to the 2014 Gaza War,” delves into the sociopolitical landscape of Israel-Palestine and the international humanitarian and human rights law implications. Sethi’s paper, “When the Last Resort is the Best Resort: Successful Convention Against Torture (CAT) Claims in Ninth Circuit Removal Cases,” explores legal strategies for non-citizens seeking relief from deportation through CAT.
Both winners completed their papers under the supervision of Visiting Professor Kathleen Maloney. The awards, funded by Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, highlight the outstanding contributions of Lewis & Clark JD students to international law scholarship.
