Professor Chris Wold continues to draw attention to the state of international whaling and advocating for enforcing international law.

His article, “Japan Expands Its Whale Hunt to Include Fin Whales and Violates Its Duty to Cooperate,” published by the European Journal of International Law, Wold details how Japan has recently begun to hunt the endangered fin whale in the North Pacific, violating international law.

Wold is serving as a member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) working group addressing issues in the commission’s decision- and rule-making. In his paper, “40 Years After the Moratorium on Commercial Whaling: Assessing the Competence of the International Whaling Commission to Confront Critical Threat to Cetaceans,” published by Pace International Law Review, Wold notes, “The IWC continues to struggle to determine what it can and can’t do in an era in which the commercial whaling of IWC members (Iceland, Norway) is not subject to IWC rules due to their reservations to the moratorium on commercial whaling.”
