Juris Education recently interviewed Professor Joanna Perini-Abbott, Director of the Advocacy Center at Lewis & Clark Law School, highlighting what makes the school’s Trial Advocacy Program unique.

Professor Perini-Abbott emphasized the program’s accessibility, noting that all interested students receive hands-on courtroom training and opportunities to compete. The program has expanded its introductory trial skills course to 40 seats, guarantees inter-school competition opportunities for all 20 members of its mock trial team, and launched a new student group with more than 40 members that hosts a major intraschool competition each spring.

The program is also deeply connected to the Portland legal community, with more than 50 practicing attorneys and judges volunteering each fall to teach and mentor students. Through this integration of training, mentorship, and community support, students develop technical trial skills as well as professionalism, ethics, and judgment—leaving them courtroom-ready upon graduation.
