Professor Juliet Stumpf Receives 2025 Leo Levenson Award

The 2025 Excellence in Teaching Award went to “a professor whose intellect, commitment, and compassion have profoundly shaped not only the academic lives of her students, but also the field of law itself,” said presenter Krista Lewis.

The 2025 Excellence in Teaching Award went to “a professor whose intellect, commitment, and compassion have profoundly shaped not only the academic lives of her students, but also the field of law itself,” said presenter Krista Lewis, who went on to talk about Professor Juliet Stumpf’s ground-breaking scholarship in helping create the field of crimmigration, the intersection of criminal and immigration law, as well as her lasting impact on students.

“For many members of our school, the need to know the law is personal and it’s urgent,” said Stumpf in her acceptance speech. “This community, our community, is not just watching or reading about current events online or in case books. It is impacting our friends, our families, ourselves. For some, learning the law has felt very immediate.”

Stumpf holds the law school’s Edmund O. Belsheim Professor of Law chair, awarded in 2023; she has been widely published and recognized as one of the 10 most-cited immigration law scholars in the United States, among many other accolades, for her trailblazing immigration law work and teaching excellence. She co-founded CINETS, the transnational, interdisciplinary network of crimmigration scholars and serves on the board of directors of the Innovation Law Lab.
