This year’s Data Privacy Symposium, the Data Privacy Group’s (DPG) sixth, centered on “Privacy at the Crossroads: Adapting to an Uncertain Future.”

The student-led event annually brings together luminaries from the Portland data privacy community. This year they covered topics such as ensuring privacy for clients, avoiding discrimination through the use of AI, and national cybersecurity litigation developments. Dan Nichols of Juris Law gave the keynote, spotlighting attorney responsibility when it comes to data privacy. Other speakers included Schwabe’s Brittani Gambrell, Bracker & Holder’s Olivia Holder, and Intel’s general counsel Hannah Pageler.

Former Lewis & Clark students who founded DPG compared notes with current group members and they confirmed how much attendance and community participation have grown—so much so, the group is now planning a fall symposium. DPG president Violet McAfee envisions this as, “solidifying DPG’s role as a cornerstone of the privacy community here in Portland.”
