Bringing critical attention to how customer rating systems can perpetuate discrimination towards gig workers and other employees, Keith Cunningham-Parmeter won the 2024 Huffman Scholarship Award for his 2023 article in the UCLA Law Review, “Discrimination by Algorithm: Employer Accountability for Biased Customer Reviews.” In the paper, he discusses how unchecked ratings systems can give power to potentially biased reviews and undercut fundamental worker protections.

The Huffman Award recognizes law school faculty who pursue transformative scholarship. Cunningham-Parmeter joined Lewis & Clark in 2024, and was named last year’s Robert E. Jones Professor of Advocacy and Ethics.
