Why
 do
 violent
crimes
 often
go
unprosecuted
 in
Indian
 country?

Date: February 24 2010, 12:00pm - 1:00pm Location: Classroom 1

The federal government has the exclusive authority to prosecute violent felonies on reservations, but does not always prosecute these crimes. The result is a criminal justice gap that draws crime to Indian country and leaves tribal citizens vulnerable.

We will watch a 25 minute segment from Bill Moyer’s Journal entitled ‘Lawless Lands’, and then hear from Billy J. Williams, Chief of the Violent Crimes Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office about obstacles to the federal government’s prosecution of crime in Indian country.
