Law School Commencement

Where: The Law School Commencement Ceremony will be held inside Pamplin Sports Center. Campus Map.
The ceremony typically lasts almost 2 hours. No tickets needed. Arrive early for parking and seating. Guests are also encouraged to dress for the weather if the ceremony is in the stadium outside.
Commencement Speaker 2013
Dean Erwin Chemerinsky
Erwin Chemerinsky is Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of California, Irvine School of Law.
Previously, he taught at Duke Law School for four years, during which he won the Duke University Scholar-Teacher of the Year Award in 2006. Before that he taught for 21 years at the University of Southern California School of Law, and served for four years as director of the Center for Communications Law and Policy.
Chemerinsky has also taught at UCLA School of Law and DePaul University College of Law.
His areas of expertise are constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights and civil liberties, and appellate litigation. He is the author of seven books, most recently, The Conservative Assault on the Constitution (October 2010, Simon & Schuster), and nearly 200 articles in top law reviews. He frequently argues cases before the nation’s highest courts, and also serves as a commentator on legal issues for national and local media.
Chemerinsky holds a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.

Two shuttle vans will run from the law school to the college starting at 9:30am on commencement day for everyone.

Cap and Gown Pickup
Caps and gowns can be picked up in the Student Lounge of the Law School on Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday May 8. On both days the times will be 11am-2pm and 5pm-6pm. We will send an email to remind students and post signs at the law school. If you are unable to pick up your regalia yourself, you may have somebody pick it up on your behalf. You need to provide that person with a written notice giving us permission to release your regalia to them. If it is impossible for you to get your regalia on the pick-up dates above, you may pick it up at our Career Services office or on graduation day, you may pick it up between between 8:15am-9:30am in Room 126 of the Swimming Pavilion (adjacent to the Pamplin Sports Center) on the undergrad campus. There will be extra caps and gowns if needed for size issues. Graduates will be “hooded” on stage.
The Cornelius Honor Society and Honor Students Reception.

Introduction of new members of 2013 Cornelius Honor Society students and introduction of students graduating with honors by Dean and Professor of Law Robert Klonoff at 4:30pm. Student’s graduating with honors will be notified by email and or phone as soon as all honors are calculated. Liz Hobbs will notify the honors students of the May 24 reception.
The newly chosen 2013 Cornelius Honor Society members will be notified with an email from the Dean’s assistant Anh Le in May 2013.
Attire is business casual.

Commencement Day Schedule
Whether the ceremony is inside or outside, graduates need to arrive in your regalia at Pamplin Sports Center 9:15am.
PHOTOGRAPHS - arrive in cap & gown by 9:30am
9:15am for Law Review groups
Gather inside the Sports Center where a group picture will be taken. A commissioned photographer will take a group picture. Students need to assemble and pose for the photograph at 9:45am. If you are on any of the Law Reviews, you must be ready in cap and gown by 9:15am. PLEASE be on time.
A picture will also be taken of each graduate on stage receiving the degree from Dean Klonoff.
FORMATION FOR PROCESSIONAL - 9:50am
This occurs inside the front of the Pamplin Sports Center, whether the ceremony is indoors or out. Graduates will be assembled in lines for the processional by faculty members serving as marshals. The marshals will check the list and cross off the names of anyone not present so that no one’s name is called if they are not there. Associate Dean Spence will check pronunciation of all names. This takes one solid hour. Students who are not in line for the formation will not be on the list to be called at the ceremony.
THE PROCESSIONAL - 11:00am
Follow the instructions of the faculty marshals. The students lead the processional followed by the faculty and the platform party. The entire ceremony is typically around 2 hours.
CONFERRING OF DEGREES
Following the commencement address, Dean Klonoff will “present” the class. He will ask all the graduates to stand and then the graduates will be asked to come forward to receive their degrees.
Graduates will come forward by rows. The faculty marshal will instruct each row when it is time to proceed toward the stage. Leave your caps on your seats as you will be hooded on stage. When you are the next to be called, stop at the bottom of the steps until your name is called.
As soon as your name is read, proceed up the steps to the faculty member who is hooding the graduates. Turn to face the audience and the faculty member will hood you.
Next, walk to Dean Klonoff who will shake your hand. A photographer will take your picture as the dean hands you your diploma. Next move on to President Glassner who will shake your hand. Proceed on across the stage to receive the congratulations of the commencement speaker and member of the board of visitors.
Finally, proceed down the steps at the far end of the stage where you will be directed to your seat by a faculty marshal.
When you return to your seat after receiving your degree, remain standing until all graduates have received degrees. At that time all the graduates will be seated.
RETURNING CAPS AND GOWNS
After the graduation ceremony, please return your cap, gown, and hood to the Jostens’ representative at the law school. Follow the signs to the return room at the law school. Children’s Commencement Ceremony
In honor of the children of the graduating students, the Office of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Board of Directors present a special Children’s Commencement Ceremony held immediately following the Law School Commencement. It will be held in Wood Hall, Classroom 8. Family and friends are invited to attend this ceremony. Registration is necessary.
