  • Description:  Advanced Legal Research (ALR) - Oregon is designed to give future Oregon attorneys a head start in locating, understanding, and effectively navigating the law, practice materials, and other resources that will shape their day-to-day practice of law. ALR Oregon provides students an opportunity to (1) further hone the research skills introduced in Legal Research 1, and (2) explore advanced tools and methods (e.g., legislative history, transactional tools, litigation analytics, AI), all in a specifically Oregon-focused context. Those not eventually practicing in Oregon will still develop skills and a methodological framework that can be applied to getting up to speed in any new state in which they will practice.

Students learn through a combination of lectures, weekly skills exercises, and other activities. In addition, students will be given supervised experiential practice in researching answers to real Oregon-based legal questions from users of the ABA Free Legal Answers program.

  • Prerequisite: Legal Research I
  • Evaluation Method: Weekly participation-based activities, a take-home midterm, and a final research project on student-selected topic.
