  • Course Type: Experiential
  • Credits: 1

  • Description: This course centers around preparing students for the Annual National Native American Law Student Association (NNALSA) Moot Court competition. During the fall semester, students prepare practice briefs based on prior competition problems. This preparation and participation allow students to develop skills in brief writing, while applying newly learned concepts learned in Federal Indian law. Students will have opportunities to receive feedback from legal professionals actively working in Federal Indian Law and Tribal law.

Once NNALSA issues the official Moot Court problem, students work in two-person teams to prepare a brief. Depending on funding, 1 or 2 teams will be selected to submit their brief for the competition. In the spring, the selected teams will practice oral advocacy with guest judges. Students are chosen to represent the school in the national contest held early spring semester. The competition is an excellent way for students to improve their brief writing, oral advocacy, and network with practitioners in the field.
