Health Law Practicum
Health Law Practicum - Professor John Kenagy
- Course Number: LAW-760 & LAW-761
- Course Type: Experiential and Highly Specialized
- Credits: 3
- Enrollment Limit: Enrollment in this practicum is limited by the number of available placements. Registrants for this course will be screened through a placement interview process in the fall in order to determine if an appropriate placement is available. To apply, submit a resume and placement form to the professor (jkenagy@lclark.edu) within one week of registering for the course.
- Registration Information: During the first three priority registration rounds students will register for LAW-760: Health Law Practicum-Placement only and the Registrar’s Office will manually add the seminar component before the start of the final round of priority registration. Once the final round of priority registration is open, students must register for both LAW-760: Health Law Practicum-Placement AND LAW-761: Health Law Practicum-Class to officially register for the course. Students must be enrolled in both the placement and seminar component in order to earn credit.
- Description: The course provides hands-on experience for students interested in the practice of health law across a wide range of legal fields and institutional settings. Students will work under the supervision of an experienced attorney in placements that may include health-focused law firms, in-house counsel offices within health systems, HIPAA privacy and compliance offices, state health policy and regulatory agencies, counsel to licensed clinical provider associations and healthcare labor organizations, and attorneys representing health insurers. Through these placements, students will gain exposure to the diverse legal environments in which health law is practiced and the regulatory, operational, and policy issues that shape modern healthcare delivery. Students are expected to work in their placements at least 8 hours per week and to develop a written product of at least moderate complexity and length during the internship experience. Companion classes will provide context for healthcare-related legal issues.
Placement forms are available on the Registrar’s webpage for Applications for Classes and here. If the student cannot be matched with an appropriate placement, the student will need to drop the course. After the student commits to a placement, the student may not drop the seminar. Course is graded credit/no credit only.
- Prerequisite: Prerequisites and certification may be required in the instructor’s discretion.
- Evaluation Method: Class participation and feedback from the internship supervising attorney
