IN REMEMBRANCE
MURIEL DEUTSCH LEZAK, 1927-2021
Muriel Deutsch Lezak, age 94, died October 6, 2021, having led a remarkable life. She was brilliant, accomplished, and widely beloved.
Muriel was born to Lester and Sylvia (Friedman) Deutsch in Chicago on August 26, 1927. After high school, she attended the University of Chicago (the finest academic institution anywhere, she touted!), graduating with an M.A. in Human Development in 1949. A week later, she married the love of her life, Sidney Lezak. She delighted in sharing the fact that she and Sid “slept under the same roof” for years before marrying, having grown up in the same apartment building on Chicago’s South Side.
In lieu of a honeymoon, Muriel and Sid together drove west to Portland, Oregon and never looked back. She was a proud Oregonian and couldn’t understand why anyone would live elsewhere. She and Sid soon developed a wide circle of friends and became active in local civic, arts, and cultural life. They raised their family in Southwest Portland, where they loved entertaining on their large deck.
In 1960, Muriel earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Portland. She established herself as an early leader in the field of neuropsychology and the assessment of brain damage. Her landmark 1976 book, Neuropsychological Assessment, is now in its fifth edition (with co-authors) and has become an essential teaching text worldwide. Her work was grounded in her long tenure as a clinical neuropsychologist at the Portland VA Hospital. She was also Professor of Neurology at the Oregon Health & Science University for many years. Throughout her decades-long career, she taught and lectured around the globe and was widely published. From 1987-88, Muriel was president of the International Neuropsychological Society. In her 80s, she served as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Australia, working well into “retirement.”
After their three children were grown, Muriel and Sid became inveterate world travelers. Together they adventured to wonderful places on every continent save Antarctica. A devoted Francophile, Muriel took great joy in spending time in France. She read for pleasure almost exclusively in French. She remained an avid traveler throughout her 80s and particularly delighted in trips abroad with her grandchildren. At age 90, she accompanied her family on safari in Uganda! When in Portland, she cherished time playing the piano and gardening; attending concerts, films, and art exhibits; and joining friends for wine and cheese or a meal – sometimes all in one day. Many who knew Muriel cited her as their role model for growing old while remaining energetic, active, and engaged.
Muriel is survived by her loving daughters, Anne Lezak (Harry Chen) and Miriam Lezak (David Martin), daughter-in-law, Brigid Flanigan, and German “daughter” Lexi Von Hoffman, along with nine grandchildren – Adrian, Alyssa, and Laurel Chen; Stephen, Eleanor, and Daniel Lezak; and Alexa, Rosalie, and Dakota Martin – all of whom she adored. She was pre-deceased by Sid, her devoted partner of almost fifty years, their beloved son David, and her older brother Victor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lezak Legacy Fellowship (care of Lewis & Clark Law School), the Portland Art Museum, or Central City Concern. The Lewis & Clark Law Review hosted a symposium on April 17, 2021 featuring scholarship on race and criminal justice reform. A recording of the Zoom event is available for viewing here.
The 2021 Distinguished International Law Visitor is Philippe Sands, Professor of Laws and Director of the Centre on International Courts and Tribunals, University College London, University of London. He will speak about the flight of Nazis from Germany to Argentina, as well as the origins of the legal concepts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
Please join us for a Celebration of Life in honor of Jeffrey D. Jones: Beloved Professor, Husband, Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend.
Join Professor Bill Funk, Dean Jennifer Johnson, Director of Alumni Relations Suraya Barbee ’10, fellow alumni and prospective students at a reception.
