  • 6:00pm - 8:00pm: Screening of Jose Antonio Vargas’ film, “Documented” and Panel

    In 2011, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in the TheNew York Times Magazine.

    Documented chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his journey through America as an immigration reform activist; and his journey inward as he reconnects with his mother, whom he has not seen in person in over 20 years. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and reception.

    The Minority Law Students Association (MLSA) will be hosting another Debriefing Session with Oregon Court of Appeals Judge Darleen Ortega Wood Hall Seminar Room LEZAK. Please RSVP by Sunday 10/27 at MLSALCLaw@gmail.com if you plan on attending.  Just a reminder, debriefing sessions are where you can come and get the Judge’s advice on anything concerning law school.

  • Stephen Manning 12:15pm - 1:30pm: Transnational LGBTQ Couples
    Join Stephen Manning, a partner at Immigration Law Group, PC and Teresa Statler, a sole immigration law practitioner in Portland, to explore policy and practice in this area of law. This will include the obstacles and legal consequences affecting transnational couples as opposed to domestic couples.Obstacles include residency, citizenship,detention, deportation and asylum.

    Mediterranean food with vegan options, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

  • 12:00pm - 1:00pm: Criminal Aliens: the criminalization of undocumented immigrants
    Criminal Aliens: A discussion of the Department of Homeland Security’s Criminal Alien Program, Secure Communities and the criminalization of undocumented immigrants.

    The Obama administration has deported record numbers while claiming to focus removal efforts on “criminal aliens.” Who are these “criminal aliens,” how does the program work, and why has the ACLU sued Multnomah County? Join Stephen Manning, adjunct professor at Lewis& Clark, and Jaime Limon Guzman, an immigrant rights organizer, as they discuss these topics and more.

    Join BLSA and LLS for a combined Judges Panel, “Minorities on the Bench”. Come meet Oregon Judges who will share how they came to Oregon, why they stayed and what they like most about being a Judge. Great opportunity for 1Ls to meet local Judges and learn first hand how to prepare for judicial clerkships and externships. This event will be held in Classroom 4, 12:15pm-1:30pm.     Please join the ACLU, BLSA and NLG Student Groups for a showing of the film Freedom Riders, which tells the story of the more than 400 brave nonviolent activists who toured the Deep South in 1961.
  • 12:00pm: Appellate Brief Writing Session with Judge Ortega
    Judge Darleen Ortega from the Oregon Court of Appeals will be on campus to give 1Ls the ins and outs of writing an appellate brief. Judge Ortega has been on the Court of Appeals since 2003. Pizza will be served; event is sponsored by MLSA.

    Join Latino Law Society for a Day of the Dead Celebration. Day of the Dead is a traditional Latino celebration where we celebrate the lives that have passed on. An altar in their honor will be displayed in LRC from October 29-November 2.
     

    This Holiday is celebrated across Latin America on November 1 and 2, we will be offering members of the law school campus Hot Chocolate and Day of the Dead Bread on Thursday November 1, 2012 in LRC. Please visit the altar and enjoy Hot Chocolate and Bread in Celebration of our loved ones.
