Over 400 Attend National Animal Law Conference, Including Students from 60+ Law Schools

Animal law experts joined animal law students, attorneys, and activists in Portland, Oregon for the 25th Anniversary of the Animal Law Conference October 13 – 15, 2017.  Sponsored by the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Lewis & Clark Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, the conference addressed cutting edge issues in this emerging field of law. Over 400 attended from around the country and as far away as Kenya and Japan. Students from 60+ U.S. law schools participated.

Attendees had the opportunity to hear from 27 expert animal law speakers, network with the leading advocates in the field, and celebrate a quarter-century of the conference. Lewis & Clark Dean Jennifer Johnson kicked off the event with a special welcome, followed by numerous panels that covered a variety of topics such as animals as crime victims, aquatic animal law, international animal law, and combatting racism and sexism in the animal protection community.

Lewis & Clark Law School is a leader in the field of animal law and was the first law school to offer a full program in animal law. Within a robust and multi-disciplinary animal law curriculum, the law school offers the only Animal Law LLM degree program in the world, summer classes, and is home to the first-ever Animal Law Review, and Student Animal Legal Defense Fund.
