Lewis & Clark Law School Joins Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Program

Lewis & Clark Law School is proud to announce its official participation as a School of National Service in the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award program. This initiative allows the law school to provide matching scholarships of up to $5,000 per year for eligible AmeriCorps alums who receive the Segal Education Award—a benefit designed to support students who have dedicated themselves to national service.

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, established to support AmeriCorps alums in financing their graduate or undergraduate education, can be used to pay for current educational expenses at an eligible institution or repay eligible student loans.

The law school’s participation in the program was sparked by a conversation between Professor Steve Johansen and first-year law student Jack Flaningam ’27, who had served two years with College Possible. This AmeriCorps-supported program helps underrepresented students navigate college admissions.

“When I met with Professor Johansen to talk about law school costs, I remember asking him if he knew about the AmeriCorps Segal Award Program,” Flaningam explained. “One question led to the next, and I found myself sending him an email with some information about the program. I was pleasantly surprised when Professor Johansen soon responded with a follow-up email to share his enthusiasm for the program and his interest in having Lewis & Clark Law School become a School of National Service.”

Following Flaningam’s inquiry, the law school applied for and secured recognition as a School of National Service, committing to match Segal Awards for up to 15 AmeriCorps alumni per year on a first-come, first-served basis. This initiative aligns with Lewis & Clark’s strong tradition of public interest law support and involvement, as it has one of the highest rates in the nation for graduates finding employment with government and nonprofit careers.

“Receiving this email was truly the final piece of information I needed to confirm my enrollment in Lewis & Clark Law School,” Flaningam said. “Just the fact that Professor Johansen took the time to learn more about the AmeriCorps Segal Award Program and show an interest in promoting AmeriCorps work made me feel assured I was going to a school that valued public interest causes.”

In addition to participating in the Segal Award program, Lewis & Clark Law School also supports veterans through the Yellow Ribbon Program, matching scholarships from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs by up to $5,000 per year for eligible students.

Professor Johansen noted that Lewis & Clark Law School is one of only five law schools nationwide participating in the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award program, alongside Vermont Law and the University of Maryland.

For students with a background in public service, this new initiative further solidifies Lewis & Clark Law School as a leading institution that values and supports those who have dedicated themselves to serving others.
