Alaska Victim Legal Assistance Network
Crime victims in Alaska and other rural states across the United States face unique barriers to accessing services. Alaska’s vast territory and geographically isolated communities, lack of crime victim resources and attorneys in most rural areas, and the insidious nature of crime victimization make the provision of wraparound legal services particularly challenging. There is need for crime victim services to traditionally underserved populations within Alaska including racial, cultural and ethnic communities, immigrants, and limited English proficient populations. Project Partners are overcoming these challenges through innovative strategies to make sure underserved crime victims are accessing the legal representation they deserve.
In response to this need, the Alaska Institute for Justice, Alaska Legal Services Corporation, and the UAA Justice Center have formed a grant partnership of statewide nonprofit and state organizations who work with crime victims in Alaska. The project partners include:

- Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
- Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
- Alaska Office of Victims’ Rights
- Alaska Violent Crimes Compensation Board
- The Municipality of Anchorage Prosecutor’s Office
- The Anchorage Mayor’s Office
The project partners work together to implement and enhance a comprehensive, collaborative model for delivering wraparound legal services to all crime victims that can be replicated in other rural states. In particular, the grant partners will develop a language access plan to increase access to services for Limited English Proficient individuals and will create a referral mechanism to ensure that crime victims are able to access all of the network partners.
