April 1, 2009: Prosecuting Wildlife Crime

In 2006, a California man went on an illegal hunting spree in Oregon, involving bear baiting and the deaths of two elk and a deer. When he transported these animals across state lines, his violations of Oregon law became violations of the federal Lacey Act. Prosecutor and Lewis & Clark adjunct professor Dwight Holton took on the case which resulted in a plea agreement requiring Ronald Ray Jurin to serve three years of probation and pay a $50,000 penalty, which is unusually high for wildlife crime. Jurin is also prohibited from hunting in 26 states.
