Associate Professor Ozan Varol was interviewed on BBC World on May 17, 2015 about his law review article, “Are There Democratic Coups?” In the article - and in the interview - Varol argues that not all military coups are equally a menace to democracy, and that certain types of coups, he which calls democratic coups, can facilitate a transition from an authoritarian regime to a democratic one. As examples, Varol cited coups that happened in Turkey in 1960, in Portugal in 1974, and Egypt in 2011.
You can follow Professor Varol’s writing on his blog and download a free chapter from his upcoming book, The Democratic Coup d’État.
